Vol. 249 No. 11

Ceisteanna — Questions Oral Answers. - Anti-Polution Devices.

75.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether it is proposed to fit anti-pollution devices to public service vehicles.

The Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles) Regulations, 1963, made under section 11 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, provides that all mechanically propelled vehicles, including public service vehicles, shall be constructed, maintained and used so as to prevent as far as is reasonably possible the emission of noxious gases.

It has not been possible to specify in the regulations the particular devices which should be fitted for this purpose but I am informed that the problem of exhaust emission control is under examination by CIE. Should it appear likely at any stage that an amendment of the regulations would secure an improvement in the position, I would be pleased to have such a proposition considered.
