Vol. 250 No. 3

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - USSR/Irish Trade.

6.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether a trade treaty is envisaged between Soviet Russia and Ireland; whether this would necessitate a visit to Moscow by him; whether he expects an early conclusion to the present talks; and if he will indicate the Irish trading interests included.

Talks between Irish and Soviet officials on the development of trade between the two countries commenced in Moscow in October. The Irish side was comprised of officers of the Departments of External Affairs, Industry and Commerce, and Agriculture and Fisheries with an adviser from Córas Tráchtála. It would be premature for me to speculate as to what the eventual outcome of those talks may be.

Which Irish trading interests are involved or which trading interests would look for increase in trade? I understand there is a big adverse trade balance between this country and the Soviet Union. Which Irish trading interests will benefit?

I am afraid I cannot say just now. I have not these details here.
