Vol. 250 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pension and Mortality Benefit Schemes.

24.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will introduce legislation making it obligatory on all employers to provide pensions and mortality benefit schemes for their employees.

No such proposal is under consideration at present.

Is there any consideration being given to such legislation?

It is one of many things under discussion but I would not like to say it is one that is getting priority.

Has the Minister received any representations on the necessity for such legislation from any union?

I have, yes. I could call it representations.

May I ask the Minister if the Department of Finance have communicated with the Department of Labour that they should in turn advise the Labour Court that no modifications, no variations, no amendment whatsoever of any existing superannuation, pension, retirement or sick pay scheme may be introduced at this point in time as it would be contrary to the Prices and Incomes Bill? Would the Minister for Labour have any observations to make on that?

We cannot have a debate on this. The Deputy is making a speech.

I am asking the Minister a question.

It is a very long and a very involved question.

No, I have had no specific communication of that type.

Ask the Minister now.
