Vol. 251 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cheques Issued to Deceased Persons.

48.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that inspectors of taxes and the Accountant-General of Revenue in some cases take over two months to alter the names of payees on cheques issued to deceased persons; and if he will have such alterations expedited in future.

Where a payable order or cheque, which cannot be cashed because of the death of the payee, is returned for alteration of the name of the payee, inquiries have to be made as to the name of the legal representative, since the payment may only be made to the person established to be such legal representative. In this connection, production of a grant of probate or letters of administration is necessary and this may lead to some delay.

If the Deputy has any particular case in mind where unnecessary delay has occurred I shall have the matter looked into on receipt of particulars.
