Vol. 251 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Offaly Estates.

85.

andMr. Cowen asked the Minister for Lands when the following estates will be divided: (1) Hodgins estate, Moyheneagh, Shinrone, Birr, County Offaly; (2) Willington estate, Shinrone, Birr, County Offaly; (3) Cawley estate, Knockearl, Cloughjordan, County Tipperary; and (4) Heenan estate, Cloughjordan, County Tipperary; and (5) if the McNally estate, Clonin, Rhode, County Offaly, will be re-let this year.

The position in relation to the estates referred to is as follows: (1) Pending completion of the necessary inquiries on the ground it is not feasible to indicate as yet when this 65-acre holding may be allotted.

(2) and (3) It is hoped to include a substantial part of the total acreage —over 800 acres—comprising these two properties in next year's allocation programme.

(4) Of a total of 210 acres in this estate, an area of 124 acres has been disposed of to date—89 acres to three local smallholders and 35 acres for afforestation. Arrangements for the allotment of the residue—86 acres— are in hand and will be implemented as soon as possible.

(5) As of now the Land Commission are not planning to offer this estate for letting. The framing of resale proposals for the property together with adjoining lands aggregating 340 acres is well advanced and it is hoped that, if these tentative plans are approved, it will be possible to implement the composite scheme of resettlement this spring.
