Vol. 251 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milk Production Prospects in EEC.

125.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries what the prospects are for the Irish creamery milk producer within the EEC, taking into account that there is a surplus of 250,000 tons of butter there at present.

As indicated in the study "Irish Agriculture and Fisheries in the EEC" published by my Department last April, the prospects for creamery milk production on Ireland's accession to an enlarged Community are favourable, the EEC target price for milk being substantially higher than the average price being received by producers here. I might add that the Community's butter stocks have been reduced during the past year and at the end of last month were about 130,000 tons, and not 250,000 tons as stated by the Deputy.
