Vol. 251 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ferns (County Wexford) Larcenies.

45.

asked the Minister for Justice, if, owing to repeated larcenies in the Ferns district, County Wexford, he will increase the Garda personnel at Ferns to deal with this situation.

As the Deputy is aware, the strength of Ferns station was reduced by one garda in October. Owing to an increase in the incidence of crime in the area, the Commissioner found it necessary last week to restore the pre-October strength, namely, one sergeant and two gardaí. In addition, a garda has been transferred there temporarily to assist in the investigation of recent crimes.

The Minister is no doubt aware that the Ferns station is now covering Camolin and Ballyduff districts. Does he consider that an increase of one garda is sufficient? Would he not consider restoring Ferns completely to full strength, bearing in mind that it is now covering Camolin and Ballyduff, in each of which there was a police station?

There are two extra men in Ferns at present.

Will the Minister leave the two there?

One of them will be left there on a permanent basis. The other man will be left there for as long as his presence is necessary.
