Vol. 251 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kildare Garda Strength.

46.

asked the Minister for Justice the Garda strength and area covered by Carbury Garda station, County Kildare (a) ten years ago and (b) today; and if he will consider increasing Garda strength in this area.

Garda strength at Carbury station in 1961 was one sergeant and three gardaí; it is now one sergeant and one garda. The area covered by the station ten years ago was 37,404 acres; at present it is 37,357 acres.

The Commissioner is satisfied that the present strength is sufficient for the police needs of the area at present.

Would the Minister not agree that this is a drastic reduction and that it is taking a considerable risk, particularly because this is on the direct route between Daingean Reformatory and Dublin and that people who escape from there would come through this area on the way back to base?

If it is closed it should solve that problem.

Will he keep a very close eye on this matter in view of the wide area to be covered?

Yes. In that area crime is low and the detection rate is almost 100 per cent.
