104.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that there is a serious housing shortage in County Mayo; and what steps he proposes to take to remedy this situation.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply to Question No. 63 of 9th July, 1970, on the subject. At present Mayo County Council have work in progress on 24 rural cottages, 52 dwellings are at tender or planning stage and sites have been or are being acquired for a further 69 dwellings. In addition, the council are providing 37 demountable dwellings and caravans and propose to provide a further 67. A scheme of 22 houses is in progress in Ballina urban area and sites are available for a further 86 houses in the town. In Westport Urban District work is in progress on a scheme of 24 houses; plans are being prepared for 50 private sites and sites are available for a further 54 houses. In Castlebar, plans are being prepared for a scheme of 24 houses and about 48 private sites and further land has been acquired for about 300 houses or sites.
