Vol. 251 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Road Grants.

126.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider paying a grant to Galway County Council for the maintenance of county roads on a 50 per cent basis similar to the main road grant at the moment.

As the funds available for road works are completely absorbed by the existing scheme of Road Fund grants, there are no moneys at my disposal from which a grant could be made to Galway, or any other county council, for the maintenance of county roads.

127.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that his Department reduced by £77,000 in the year 1968-69 the improvement grant for main and county roads in County Galway, and if he is now prepared to increase the improvement grant by at least the same amount as that by which it was reduced.

While the improvement grants for main and county roads in County Galway were reduced by £77,000 in 1967-68 due to the short fall in the income of the Road Fund which took place in 1966-67 combined with the high level of commitments arising in respect of work commenced in previous years, no further reduction was made in 1968-69. The grants for 1971-72 have not yet been determined and I cannot therefore make any statement at this stage as to the amounts to be allocated to any authority

128.

asked the Minister for Local Government the amount of the improvement grant paid by his Department to Galway Council each year since 1960.

It is assumed that the Deputy's question refers to improvement grants paid from the Road Fund. As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:
