Vol. 251 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Leaving Certificate Examination.

34.

asked the Minister for Education if pupils who were successful in particular subjects in the 1970 leaving certificate examination, even though at that time they had completed only one year of the leaving certificate course, will be entitled to be credited with such successes, having regard to the fact that they were accepted as candidates for the 1970 examination on the understanding that credits would be awarded; and, if not, why.

A circular letter issued by my Department to all post-primary schools on 6th April, 1970, stated as follows:

Successes at the Leaving Certificate Examination in 1970 obtained by pupils who have completed only one year of the prescribed two year leaving certificate course may not at any time be reckoned for the purpose of the award of the Leaving Certificate.

There is therefore no basis for the Deputy's assertion that such pupils "were accepted as candidates for the 1970 examination on the understanding that credits would be awarded" if by "credits" he means "credits towards the award of the Leaving Certificate".
