Vol. 251 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Code Marking of Eggs.

35.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will arrange that eggs being exported to Northern Ireland will not require to be code-marked.

Eggs imported from any source into the United Kingdom must be stamped with the name of the country of origin as a Merchandise Marks Act requirement and it is not, accordingly, open to me to arrange as the Deputy suggests.

Is there any way the Minister could overcome the objections in regard to eggs produced on this side of the Border, particularly at present time——

Not that I am aware of.

——because this apparently is a difficulty experienced by people exporting eggs?

As my reply indicates, it is a requirement of our own law.

Is it our own law or is it British law? If it is our own law we should surely do something about it.

It is our own law, the Merchandise Marks Act.

Could the Minister do anything to have the law amended so that some alterations could take place in relation to the export of eggs in this instance?

I shall have it examined, but I do not think there is any such possibility.
