Vol. 251 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - FCA Pay and Allowances.

47.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will amend the Defence Force Regulations so that pay and allowances will be payable to members of the FCA still suffering from illness subsequent to the completion of the normal training course or courses.

The answer is in the negative.

Pay and allowances are issuable to members of An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil in respect of periods of annual training or courses of instruction. If a member suffers from an illness attributable to military service the matter would fall to be dealt with under the compensation arrangements applicable to an Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil.

Is the Minister aware that I have been in touch with his Department about this specific case? It seems an extraordinary thing that a man who is injured while on annual FCA training and has to go to St. Bricin's Hospital gets no allowance because the normal time for training has elapsed. Is that a fair way to treat a man injured on training?

I think I know the case the Deputy mentioned. I am informed that it is under consideration at the moment.
