Vol. 251 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lord Mayor of Dublin.

48.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether it is proposed to retain the office of Lord Mayor of Dublin in any reorganisation of local government in the Dublin region, having regard to the high esteem in which the people of Dublin hold that historic office.

The question of whether the office of Lord Mayor of Dublin should be retained could most appropriately be considered when detailed legislative proposals for the reorganisation of local government in the Dublin area are being prepared. As indicated in the White Paper on Local Government Reorganisation, any constructive and worthwhile suggestions put forward in relation to such matters will be taken into account before any such proposals for legislation are prepared.

Would the Minister agree that it would be a worthwhile proposal to retain the post of Lord Mayor?

These matters will be considered before legislation is prepared.

Would the Minister not think it a good thing to burn the White Paper before local government disappears altogether from the country?

Could the Minister say when he anticipates that the legislation will be before the House?

I cannot anticipate at this stage.

In view of the necessity to hold local elections in the autumn of 1972 could the Minister say whether they will be held under the present system or the system which the Minister intends to introduce?

It would be desirable to have any reorganisation that is decided on carried out before the next local elections. I am not in a position to say whether that is feasible.

Would the Minister consider postponing the local elections?

Sin ceist eile.

The Minister can answer it next week.
