Vol. 251 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Parking Fines.

49.

asked the Minister for Local Government if the money collected in parking fines will be used for the erection of multi-storey car parks; and, if not, why.

The Road Traffic Act of 1961 provides that moneys accruing by way of parking fines are paid into the Road Fund. Having regard to the extent of the current resources of the fund, I would not find it practicable at present, even if I wished to do so, to allocate moneys for the provision of multi-storey parks at the expense of other more urgent works. I would hope that a commercial operation such as the building and management of such a park could be undertaken by private enterprise in co-operation with, and subject to the guidance of the local authority concerned on such aspects as location and charges.

Has the Minister any information as to initiative by private enterprise in this field?

I have not at the moment.

English companies.

Is the Minister confident that these multi-storey car parks will be provided? If private enterprise will not do it somebody will have to do it because it is becoming increasingly difficult for motorists to find parking space.

Question No. 50.

They will find difficulty from now on if they put their cars in the wrong place.

I wonder what is more suggest than parking facilities in the city of Dublin or in Cork at present?

Room for the cars on the roads, for one thing.
