Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Discussions with President Nixon.

3.

asked the Taoiseach what matters he proposes to discuss with President Nixon of the United States of America when he meets him in March.

Last October, when President Nixon was here, I had an exchange of views with him on the main problems of the current international situation. I also indicated to him my views about the situation in the North of Ireland. I hope to resume discussion of such matters with him when he receives me this month.

As the Taoiseach is aware, under existing American legislation the EEC is regarded as a fully-developed area and one, therefore, not enjoying tax concessions which are applicable to Ireland which, under American legislation, is treated as a less than fully-developed area as a result of which we have received American investments which we might not otherwise have received. Would the Taoiseach use this occasion to impress on the distinguished President of the USA the urgency, from Ireland's point of view, that these tax concessions should continue to apply to American investors in Ireland, both those who are already here and those who might be encouraged to come here if those concessions were to continue to apply?

They are not major concessions and I doubt if the use of the plural is justified in this context. Nevertheless, the Deputy may be assured that any matter affecting the interests of this country vis-à-vis the American Administration will be mentioned by me.
