Vol. 252 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emigration Forecast.

7.

asked the Taoiseach whether any forecast of emigration is available for 1971, whether there has been an increase in such forecast in 1971 compared to a similar period in 1970; and whether any tentative figures are available for 1970 and 1971 to date.

Reliable figures for net emigration are available only for intercensal periods. For periods since the last census of population the only indicators of net emigration are the figures of net outward passenger movement by sea and air. For the 12 months ended November, 1970, the most recent period for which figures are available, the net outward passenger movement by sea and air was 7,696 persons. This compares with a figure of 13,410 persons for the 12 months ended November, 1969. It must be pointed out that the net passenger movement figures have proved unreliable as a measure of net emigration in some intercensal periods.

No forecast of emigration is available for 1971.
