Vol. 252 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ambassadors' Salaries and Allowances.

5.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the salary and all allowances and benefits (including staff) for household and domestic purposes paid in 1970-71 to Ireland's Ambassadors in (a) Washington, (b) London, (c) Bonn, (d) Paris and (e) Brussels.

The salaries and allowances payable to the Ambassadors in question are shown at pages 114 to 120 of the 1970 edition of the Directory of State Services augmented in due course by the 12th round. The representation allowance of the Ambassador in London has been increased by £500 over the figure shown. Foreign allowances are also paid in respect of any children.

Surely the Minister has a better voice than that.

He certainly had at the Ard-Fheis.

Heads of Mission are also provided with official residences and, apart from any domestic staff that may be employed by a Head of Mission at his own expense for personal needs, the cost of the minimum number of domestic servants considered essential for the running of the official residence is borne on public funds.
