Vol. 252 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Reports Submission.

40.

asked the Minister for Justice if it is normal practice for the head of the Special Detective Unit of the Garda Síochána to convey reports on matters of urgent national security to his own authorities in the force prior to their transmission to the Department for the Minister's information.

The arrangements for the submission of Garda reports by any Garda officer to his superiors in the force are matters of internal Garda administration and it is not the practice to disclose information about them or about the arrangements for sending such reports to my Department. However, on the understanding that I am not setting a precedent I am prepared on this occasion to say that the answer to the question asked is "yes".

May I place on record our thanks to the Minister for clarifying in relation to the current role of the special detective unit of the Garda Síochána the particular procedural arrangements which will be of particular interest to all Members of this House in the light of recent statements made?

Question No. 41 postponed.
