Vol. 252 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Airline and Shipping Incomes.

14.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if airline and shipping incomes are included in the figures for tourism published by Bord Fáilte for 1970 and, if so, if he will give details of the type and amount of such incomes.

Official figures in relation to tourism are compiled by the Central Statistics Office who publish an annual estimate of tourism income. The figure for 1970 is not yet available.

I am informed by Bord Fáilte that their provisional estimate of £101.2 million of tourist revenue in 1970 includes a figure of £21 million in respect of revenue earned by Irish airline and shipping companies from persons resident outside the State.

Has the cost of bringing tourists here and back again to their places of residence been included as internal tourist revenue?

No. A net figure has been arrived at. This is nothing new. This figure has always been included in tourist receipts.

The Minister is aware that the cost of travelling having increased, and £21 million having been earned by airline and shipping companies, the net figure should be £80 million and not £101 million.

It is a constant figure.

I will ask the Minister next week the figures for previous years.

I will get the exact figures for the Deputy.
