Vol. 252 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Footwear Factories.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of the years 1950 and 1970 (a) the number of footwear factories in the country and (b) the number of persons employed in them.

The number of establishments classified to the Boot and Shoe (wholesale factories) industry in the Annual Census of Industrial Production in 1950 was 39. At the end of 1970 the number was 37. The average number of persons engaged in the industry was 6,547 in 1950, and from the results available in the Quarterly Industrial Inquiry, the average number engaged in 1970 is estimated at 5,800. The 1970 estimate is subject to revision in the light of the results of the full Annual Census for 1970. The employment data for both years cover administrative, clerical and technical staff as well as industrial workers, but they exclude outside piece-workers.
