Vol. 252 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

48.

asked the Minister for Local Government what the position is regarding the Baltimore sewerage scheme, County Cork, for which contract documents were submitted to his Department on 9th December, 1965.

Contract documents for this scheme have been examined and are technically in order, but because of the failure by the local authority to submit an integrated priority list of all their sanitary services schemes in planning, I cannot say when the scheme will be released for commencement.

49.

asked the Minister for Local Government when the loan application for the Baltimore/ Castletownshend, County Cork, regional water scheme will be sanctioned.

I expect to be in a position to give a decision in this case shortly.

50.

asked the Minister for Local Government when sanction will be given for the laying of all trunk mains involved in the Clonakilty regional water scheme, County Cork.

Having regard to the need to conserve available capital for housing and other essential services, only those sanitary services works, or portions thereof, which are of a high priority can be allowed to proceed. On this basis a modified water supply scheme for the Clonakilty area, estimated to cost £180,000, was sanctioned. I cannot at present indicate when further extensions of this scheme will be released.

Would the Minister not agree that the large sum of money spent on the regional scheme can be considered to be badly spent because it is not possible to distribute the water already provided there, which is badly needed in the area?

The West Cork area has done very well in the allocations made available to it for water schemes. I have to consider all areas in the country when examining these applications.

Could the Minister give us any idea when it will be?

Not at the present time.

51.

asked the Minister for Local Government the up-to-date position of Tooreen and Aghamore group water schemes, County Mayo.

A revised design for this scheme, which will serve approximately 240 houses, has been forwarded to Mayo County Council for formal approval. Present indications are that the scheme will be costly. The group have, therefore, been advised to seek quotations for the necessary materials, etc., to enable firm costings to be determined and to establish whether the scheme will be within their financial resources.

52.

asked the Minister for Local Government the up-to-date position of the Farranfore group water scheme, County Kerry.

This scheme is in progress, pipes have been laid and a reservoir built. The construction of the reservoir does not, however, comply fully with the Department's standards and certain remedial works are necessary. As these works may only be carried out in dry weather, I understand that there may be a slight delay in completing the scheme. Twelve of the seventeen State grants allocated have been paid.

53.

asked the Minister for Local Government the cause of the delay in regard to the Newcastle group water supply scheme, Clonmel, County Tipperary.

I am not aware of any delay in regard to this scheme. Work commenced in July, 1970, and, of the 74 grants allocated, 44 have been paid to date and a further 19 are being processed for payment. In addition, £4,828 out of the special contribution of £7,000 being provided by Tipperary SR County Council has already been paid to the group.

54.

asked the Minister for Local Government when it is proposed to commence work on the water supply scheme at Park, Dundrum, County Tipperary.

I understand that work on the Dundrum water supply scheme, the headworks of which will be located near Park, will commence shortly.

55.

asked the Minister for Local Government the position regarding the group water supply scheme for Tankerstown, Bansha, County Tipperary.

Tipperary SR County Council approved of the design for this scheme, subject to the use of higher class piping so that work could ultimately be integrated into the regional scheme network. They indicated that they were prepared to meet the increased cost involved. As it appears that the cost would be higher than that envisaged, I have asked the council if they will meet the higher amount, which will, of course, qualify for loan and subsidy.

56.

asked the Minister for Local Government the cause of the delay in sanctioning the Poulater group water supply scheme, Ballybacon, Cahir, County Tipperary.

The design for this scheme is with Tipperary SR County Council for formal approval. When this is received, it will be open to the group to seek quotations for the necessary materials etc. so that firm costings can be determined. At this stage the question of sanction to the scheme does not, therefore, arise.
