Vol. 252 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Widows' Pensions.

18.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the high rate of inflation in the last year, he will make provision in this year's Budget for a substantial increase in widows' pensions; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Deputy will appreciate that I cannot indicate in advance what proposals the forthcoming Budget Statement may contain.

The Minister is aware there has been a very high degree of inflation in the last two years especially and this has more than outweighed the increases granted to widows in the last two Budgets. Widows living alone find life very difficult and those trying to rear families are unable to do so in any degree of comfort. It would take a substantial increase to alleviate their position.

I am aware we have been suffering from inflation in recent years.

Is the Minister aware that widows cannot live on the inadequate pensions? I would like an answer. The Minister refuses to reply because he is guilty.
