Vol. 253 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Antibiotics.

5.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to a report (details supplied) that Dublin's Chief Medical Officer of Health recommends that it be made unlawful to sell milk from a cow treated with an antibiotic until a stated period after treatment had elapsed; and that he had made the recommendation after studying a report by the Dublin County Chief Veterinary Officer on the effects on human beings of milk and meat from animals treated with antibiotics; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have seen the press report referred to.

The public health implications of the consumption of milk and other foods containing traces of antibiotics are being examined by the Food Advisory Committee.

I understand that the committee will shortly be in a position to let me have their report and recommendations and, when I have studied them, I will decide, after consultation with the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, on any action necessary in the public health interest.
