Vol. 253 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meeting with British Prime Minister.

4.

asked the Taoiseach when he intends to meet Mr. Heath, the British Prime Minister.

I have not yet asked to have a meeting arranged with the British Prime Minister although I anticipate that, as we agreed in New York last October, we will have a meeting later this year.

Will the Taoiseach tell us why he does not think it worth his while to ask Mr. Heath to meet him in view of the fact that, according to a report published today, there are 7,000 fewer people at work in Ireland than there were a year ago? In view of the fact that the Free Trade Area Agreement is doing untold harm to many of our industries——

The Deputy may not discuss all these questions. It is not in order.

If he is interested in these people——

It is a question of meeting the British Prime Minister.

What is he going to see him for? He must have a reason. Will he just go over and shake hands and say: "Goodbye, good luck"? Surely he must have a reason if he is going to meet him? He should be able to answer these questions. Is he standing idly by?

I am calling Question No. 5.
