Vol. 253 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Suir Arterial Drainage.

41.

asked the Minister for Finance the up-to-date position regarding the arterial drainage of the river Suir in County Tipperary; and when work is likely to commence.

42.

asked the Minister for Finance what steps are being taken to alleviate recurring flooding in the vicinity of Laffansbridge, Killenaule, County Tipperary.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 41 and 42 together. The design of a drainage scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, for the Suir catchment is in progress. Until the scheme and estimate of cost have been prepared and considered and the requirements of the Act complied with I cannot indicate when actual drainage works are likely to be commenced.

The Clashawley River which drains the Laffansbridge area is in the Suir catchment and as such could only be dealt with by the Commissioners of Public Works as part of a comprehensive drainage scheme for that catchment as a whole. The Clashawley has been surveyed but pending the preparation of the Suir Scheme and the evaluation of its economics I cannot say what channels may be included therein.
