Vol. 254 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Relations with Norway.

25.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether he proposes, through the establishment of resident ambassadors in each capital, to place diplomatic relations with Norway on a direct and continuing basis.

We have an Ambassador accredited to Norway who is also accredited to Denmark and is resident in Copenhagen. The question of having an Ambassador to Norway resident in Oslo when Ireland and Norway are both members of the European Communities will be considered at the appropriate time.

Would the Minister not agree, considering the coincidence of interests between this country and Norway in the enlarged Community and considering also the fact that the Norwegian Government has shown considerably more vigilance in relation to the defence of its own interests, notably its fishery interests, than the Irish Government have done, we would stand to gain by putting our diplomatic relations with Norway immediately on a much closer, more intimate and continuing basis?

No, Sir. I disagree entirely with the suggestion in that supplementary question.
