Vol. 254 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - East Pakistan Refugees.

26.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs what assistance Ireland is giving towards the provision of shelter and medical supplies for East Pakistan refugees in India.

As the Deputy will be aware from a press release issued by my Department on last Thursday, the Government have decided, subject to Dáil approval, to contribute £50,000 towards international efforts for the relief of distress in India and in Pakistan resulting from the situation in East Pakistan. Of this amount, £20,000 will be contributed to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), £20,000 to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and £10,000 to the Irish Red Cross Society.

Is the Minister in a position to say when the necessary resolution to implement this decision will be introduced?

I cannot say.

In view of the recent criticism of the Red Cross would it not have been advisable to give it all to the other sources?

No, Sir.
