Vol. 254 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Warble Fly Infestation.

50.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will consider having owners of livestock compensated in cases where, following treatment for warble fly last year, the livestock subsequently showed signs of warble fly infestation which reduced their market value.

I appreciate that the existence of lumps on the back of an animal which has been dressed for warbles can depress the market value of the animal in the same way as if it had not undergone the dressing. This is, however, an unavoidable risk which could not possibly be underwritten by my Department.

Would the Minister agree that because of the necessity to maintain the present level of prices for livestock uniform standards should be introduced?

Can the Deputy clarify "uniform standards"?

In regard to the preparation of dressings and in the dressings generally.

I agree that the type of dressing used should be as near to being 100 per cent effective as possible.
