Vol. 254 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Japanese Tyre Imports.

58.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that Japanese competition in the tyre market is about to cause serious redundancy in Irish factories; and if he will impose a tariff on Japanese tyres in order to safeguard employment here.

There is a tariff of 45 per cent or £3 each, whichever is the greater, on Japanese tyres.

Representations have, however, been made to me that imports of tyres from Japan have recently been increasing and that, if this trend continues, employment could be affected.

I am considering these representations.
