asked the Minister for Defence if he will state in relation to the Irish Red Cross Society when and under what Act the Society were set up; by whom their officers are appointed; if the society publish a balance sheet; and the annual subvention by the Government in each of the past five years.

The Irish Red Cross Society were established on the 1st June, 1939, by the Irish Red Cross Society Order, 1939, made pursuant to the Red Cross Act, 1938. The society have statutory autonomous status in accordance with which they control their own expenditure, appoint their own staff and regulate their terms of appointment.

In accordance with the rules of the society, a statement of the accounts and balance sheet of the society for the periods ended March 31st and September 30th each year is prepared. The statement is audited by a duly qualified auditor appointed by the central council of the society. The auditor's report, together with the society's accounts, is submitted to the central council.

Under statutory authority, the following amounts were paid by way of grant-in-aid to the society by my Department in each of the last five completed financial years:
