Vol. 254 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Community Schools.

33.

asked the Minister for Education why vocational education committees have received no official circular or communication from his Department n relation to his proposals for community schools.

Before I formulated my proposals on community schools. I had consultations with the various interested parties. These included the IVEA which represents the vocational education committees.

Does the Minister not consider that individual vocational committees were important enough to be consulted and to discuss this proposal instead of going to a body which has little contact with individual committees?

I do not accept that it has little contact. The Deputy is aware that it represents the vocational education committees and in relation to proposals which are of national rather than a local concern, it is the practice to consult the IVEA, not the individual vocational education committees. On the other hand, the vocational education committees in the areas concerned were invited to attend a public meeting.
