Vol. 254 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Leasing of Bulls.

34.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the present system of leasing bulls; how many bulls are on lease to breeders; the name of the breeder and the number of animals available for mating in each case; and the length of time for which these bulls are leased to each breeder.

As the information required by the Deputy is in the form of a tabular statement. I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the official Report.

2. Bulls on lease are also used for service of pedigree cows in other herds in the area. Up to 80 cows are expected to be available for service by each bull.

3. Bulls are not leased to a breeder for any specified time for the leasing arrangements for all bulls are reviewed each year.

4. The annual leasing fee is about 10 per cent of the purchase price.

Is it because it is a source of embarrassment that it is in the form of a tabular statement?

I cannot imagine how it could be a source of embarrassment.

The Minister could not be embarrassed.

If the Deputy would care to enlighten me as to the source of possible embarrassment——

The £100,000 that is missing should be a source of embarrassment to the Minister.

Was political influence used to keep bulls with breeders when the bulls were not being used?

These bulls were required in other areas where they were badly needed.

I do not think that is the case. I am not aware of the political allegiance——

It might have been before the Minister took over, but the bulls are still there.

If the Deputy has a specific complaint I suggest he should deal with it by putting down another question.

Is the Minister not aware that when the Charollais bulls came in here the group of people who were selected to keep these bulls were a very peculiar bunch? Not one was a breeder.

That is a serious reflection on the front bench members of the Fine Gael Party.

What serious reflection?

Does the Minister consider the best possible use has been made of all the Charollais bulls?

Is the Minister aware that there are Opposition Deputies going around the country telling people that, if they want to get a bull, they must make representations to these Deputies?

But they do not have their hand out at the same time. It is bulls we are talking about, not guns.
