Vol. 254 No. 14

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Vehicle Insurance.

109.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of the latest year for which figures are available the number of convictions for the non-insurance of motor vehicles.

The available statistics are in respect of convictions for offences under Part VI of the Road Traffic Act, 1961. These offences include not only non-insurance of mechanically propelled vehicles but also such matters as failure to produce a certificate of insurance on request by a member of the Garda Síochána and failure to give notice of an accident to the vehicle insurer.

During the year ended 30th September 1970, 6,080 persons were convicted of offences under Part VI of the Act of 1961. In the case of 845 other persons who were proceeded against for such offences, the charges were held by court to have been proved.
