Vol. 254 No. 14

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Deadly Instrument Sales.

113.

Mr. T.J. Fitzpatrick

(Cavan), Mr. L. Burke and Mr. L'Estrange: asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that knives and catapults capable of inflicting fatal injuries can be purchased by young people in Cork city without restriction; and when he proposes to introduce legislation to have the sale of such deadly instruments controlled.

I understand from the Garda that there is no evidence that flick-knives are on sale in Cork. Sheath knives and similar knives are on sale in Cork as elsewhere in the country but they, of course, have many legitimate uses in the home and otherwise. The only catapults known to be on sale are cheap ones which are not very powerful.

The Government's proposals in relation to offensive weapons are contained in the Criminal Justice Bill, 1967, the provisions of which will be brought before Dáil Éireann again at the earliest opportunity.

Is the Minister aware that two boys, one aged ten and the other aged 12, walked into a shop in Cork, bought two flick-knives in leather sheaths and most dangerous catapults? We are not supposed to bring exhibits into the House but if the Minister wants I can show them to him. They are most dangerous and should not be allowed to be on sale.

I am not aware of any shop in Cork where flick-knives are on sale. If the Deputy can send me the name and address of the shop I shall ask the gardaí to visit it and try to ensure that this will not happen again.

I shall give the Minister the whole lot next week.
