Vol. 254 No. 14

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Special UN Committee.

20.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the Government's decision on the invitation to Ireland by the Special UN Committee on Apartheid to fill one of the vacancies on the Committee.

While the Chairman of the Committee was kind enough to say recently in Dublin that he would welcome our membership because of our record in the United Nations on the question of apartheid, we have not received an invitation to join the Committee from the President of the General Assembly.

We shall, of course, continue to do whatever we consider appropriate and useful in the United Nations and elsewhere to try to bring about an end to the disgraceful and hateful policy of apartheid.

In the event of an invitation being received would the Minister be favourably disposed towards accepting membership of such a committee?

I do not like to say what I would do in regard to invitations I have not yet received.

Is the Minister sympathically disposed towards Ireland accepting one of the vacancies on this committee? The Ambassador who was here publicly stated that he would welcome Ireland joining such a committee.

He was kind enough to say that but the Deputy will appreciate that until you are invited to the party you should not say whether you would like to go or not.
