Vol. 254 No. 14

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Transport Disputes.

29.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if an estimate has been made of the loss in passengers and goods traffic to public transport and the switch to private transport as a result of inconvenience caused by recurring industrial disputes in public transport services; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

30.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the estimated loss to CIE in each of the last three years as a result of industrial disputes.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 29 and 30 together.

I have been informed by CIE that the estimated net loss to the board in each of the last three years as the result of industrial disputes involving CIE personnel was as follows:

£

Year ended 31st March, 1969

600

Year ended 31st March, 1970

20,100

Year ended 31st March, 1971

191,300

I have also been informed by CIE that, because of the many other factors which impinge on the situation, it is not possible to quantify the permanent loss of passenger and goods traffic as a result of recurring industrial disputes in public transport services.

Would the Minister consider the time ripe in view of the recurring disputes instead of having further investigations into trade union activities that some investigation should take place into the top echelon of CIE who are in my opinion mainly responsible for disputes?

I will not say anything until the present dispute is settled we hope. I will not aggravate that situation for the present.

I do not think the Minister could aggravate it.
