Vol. 255 No. 7

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Children's Allowances.

22.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if illegitimate children and the children of a mother's subsequent marriage can be included in the same claim for the purpose of children's allowances.

Illegitimate children and the children of a mother's subsequent marriage may be included in the same claim for the purpose of children's allowances if they are all normally residing with the claimant. If, however, the mother and her husband do not establish a separate household, including the illegitimate children, the statutory regulations provide that the allowance in respect of those children is payable to the head of the household in which they normally reside. As the Deputy is, no doubt, aware, the person claiming the allowance can, if he so wishes, nominate the mother of the children to receive payment of the allowance.
