Vol. 255 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - German Measles Vaccination.

13.

asked the Minister for Health whether his Department intend to introduce routine vaccination against German measles in school-going children and post-partum females.

As I have already indicated publicly, it is my intention to introduce a scheme of rubella vaccination later this year. I hope to be in a position to recommend the scheme to health boards shortly when details have been finalised.

Will this be a nationwide scheme or will it be selective?

The scheme will be confined to those in the 12 to 14 age group and operated mainly through the schools and directly by the public health medical staff. Supplies of the vaccine will also be available to private medical practitioners.

Will the vaccine be available in maternity hospitals?
