andDr. O'Connell asked the Taoiseach how the present figure for unemployment compares with the figure for the corresponding week last year excluding from last year's figure the number of single men in rural areas on unemployment assistance.

It is not possible to give the comparison requested. The latest available figures for the number of persons on the live register show 28,944 persons under 65 years of age in the unemployment benefit category on 16th July, 1971 as compared with 32,315 on the corresponding date last year. The comparability of these figures is not affected by the 1971 employment period orders.

4.

The number of persons in receipt of unemployment benefit was 37,808 on 3rd July, 1970 and 29,388 on 2nd July, 1971.
