Vol. 255 No. 19

Written Answers. - EEC and Local Government Administration.

159.

asked the Minister for Local Government what effect entry to the EEC will have on local government administration.

It is not expected that entry to the EEC will affect our present system of local government administration. The Treaty establishing the EEC does not contain any specific provision in regard to this subject. In practice, the system of local government administration varies fairly widely as between existing member States of the Community from the point of view of structure, finance, range of functions, et cetera. While membership of the Community will not require any basic change in the structure of our local government administration, it is possible that our experience as a member may influence our future thinking on the matter.
