Vol. 256 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Statistics.

39.

asked the Minister for Local Government the total number of houses built in Ireland in 1970.

40.

asked the Minister for Local Government the total number of local authority houses built in Ireland in 1970.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 39 and 40 together. Statistics of housing output are compiled on a financial year basis. The total number of dwellings provided in 1970-71 was 13,671, of which 3,875 dwellings were provided by local authorities. I am arranging to have a copy of the most recent edition of my Department's quarterly bulletin of housing statistics sent to the Deputy.

41.

asked the Minister for Local Government the total amount of housing grants paid by (1) his Department and (2) local authorities in each of the past three years.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

AMOUNT of grants paid for the building of new dwellings and for the reconstruction of existing dwellings.

The amounts do not include the cost of servicing borrowing for grants made by the Department or by local authorities; neither do they include grants financed from revenue by local authorities which amount to about £40,000 a year.
