Vol. 256 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rate Collectors.

42.

asked the Minister for Local Government the total number of rate collectors in the country; and the total amount paid to them by way of salary in 1970.

The information requested is not available in my Department. Following a devolution of control to local authorities in certain staffing matters the creation of most offices of rate collector is effected without reference to my Department. While details of the gross remuneration of local government officers are obtained in connection with the compilation of annual estimates of the national income breakdown of the amount as between the various categories of officers is not sought.

Why is it not possible in this small country to tell us the total number of rate collectors? Surely it should be possible to give us that figure. I want to know why it is not possible to give that figure?

It is possible for the Deputy to get the figure if he really wants it.

Will the Minister tell me how I can get it?

Yes, write to each local authority and ask them how many rate collectors are employed.

Is it not possible for the Minister for Local Government to get this figure?

No, because this information is not in the Department any longer.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
