Vol. 257 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Turf Station.

21.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power why one of the generating sets at the turf-fired power station at Bellacorick, Crossmolina, County Mayo, has been out of order since last February; and if he is aware that since then the station has been running at half power and that it will cause unemployment if it is not rectified.

I am informed by the ESB that one turbo-alternator at Bellacorick power station suffered a serious, unusual type of breakdown last February, necessitating the return of major components to the manufacturers' works in Sweden for replacement. On the basis of recently-confirmed delivery dates the board expect to have the affected turbine back in service and the power station restored to full capacity by the end of this year. I understand that employment at the station and on the associated bogs has not been and will not be affected by the breakdown.

Some of the workers are afraid they will lose their jobs if this turbine is not rectified at an early date.

There is no question but that the power station will be back to full capacity by the end of this year, in five weeks time.
