Vol. 257 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sligo-Leitrim Tourist Expenditure.

22.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power how much money has been spent in County Leitrim and in County Sligo by Bord Fáilte; and on what schemes the money was spent.

The River Shannon and lakes is one of the resort areas selected by Bord Fáilte for development under the major resort development scheme. At 31st March, 1971, development of the river in County Leitrim had involved Bord Fáilte in expenditure of £117,847. Most of this was spent on works in Carrick-on-Shannon.

In addition, minor improvements works were carried out with financial assistance from Bord Fáilte to the extent of £5,550 at Glenade and Acres Lakes. The board spent £2,105 on the development of scenic views and sign posting in County Leitrim and £24,932 on the development of fishing facilities there.

None of the resorts or resorts areas chosen for development under the major resort development scheme is in County Sligo. Bord Fáilte at 31st March, 1971, had contributed £9,014 towards minor improvement works at Lough Gill, Rosses Point, Corkran's Mall, Strandhill, Camanoe, Mullaghmore, Hazelwood House, the development of scenic views, national monuments and tidy towns and signposting. Fishing facilities in the county were assisted to the extent of £4,996 by the board.

These figures do not include grant payments by Bord Fáilte to commercial developers for the provision of recreational facilities such as cabin cruisers, horse-drawn caravans, et cetera which totalled about £290,000 for the two counties. Likewise, the figures do not include accommodation development grants, particulars of which are now given in the Bord Fáilte annual reports.
