Vol. 257 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tax Yield.

18.

asked the Minister for Finance the total amount received in taxation by the Exchequer during the period 1st July, 1969, to 30th September, 1971.

The total amount received in tax revenue during the period was £906,766,000.

And, in the same period, the Minister announced last week, he borrowed £280 million. That is over £1,100 million in two and a half years. What happened the money, with half the people in the country unemployed?

That is a separate question.

Perhaps the Deputy would care to suggest some of the expenditure which was indulged in by the Government in respect of that money which he would prefer had not taken place.

Would the Minister not agree that the spending of over £1,100 million in two and a half years and, at the same time, having fewer people in employment denotes exceedingly bad government?

(Interruptions.)
