Vol. 257 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price Review.

81.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether in view of the marked and continued rise in prices the Government have any proposals for new and efficient machinery to deal with the situation.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, I appointed the National Prices Commission in October of this year to keep under review the prices of commodities and the charges for rendering services and for carrying out works or processes and to advise me in relation to such prices and charges. I will, of course, consider any recommendation that the commission may make to me.

Will this body be in a position to supervise price increases announced by Government Departments and semi-State bodies and will they be able to take action against Government Departments and semi-State bodies who are the greatest offenders in terms of price increases?

This body, as I have indicated already, will be advising me with regard to the price increase application that come before me. They are empowered to make observations such as those outlined by the Deputy.

For instance, will the Minister be able to take action against the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs?

That is not the implication.
