Vol. 257 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Growing of Maize.

58.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he has investigated the growing of maize in this country, both for feed as a cereal and as a silage crop; and the result of any such investigations.

Experiments in the growing of maize as a silage crop were undertaken at a number of centres by my Department in 1971. The results at some centres were encouraging and feeding trials with the silage will be conducted during the winter. At other centres the results were poor because of damage by birds in the early stages of growth of the crops. Further experimental sowings are planned for next year.
