Vol. 257 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Evacuation of Irish Citizens.

18.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the number of Irish citizens in (a) India and (b) Pakistan; and the steps being taken to protect them in or to evacuate those desiring to depart from those countries, in view of the current belligerent situation there.

It is estimated that the number of Irish citizens in India is about 600, the number in East Pakistan about six and the number in West Pakistan about 60. More precise figures are not available as registration of Irish citizens abroad with the nearest embassy is not compulsory.

Before the outbreak of the present fighting arrangements had been made with the British authorities to include Irish citizens in their evacuation plans for East and West Pakistan. Similar arrangements were made by the embassy at New Delhi in respect of Irish citizens who might be in danger areas in India.

Is the number in East Pakistan six or 600?
