Vol. 257 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway School.

67.

asked the Minister for Education if there are any amalgamation proposals affecting Carrowkeel national school, Dunmore, County Galway; and if he will give details.

It is proposed to amalgamate Carrowkeel and Dunmore Boys' and Girls' schools with effect from 1st July, 1972. The Dunmore school buildings are at present being extended for the purpose.

Were the parents of the pupils concerned consulted in regard to this amalgamation?

I have not got that information but as a general rule they are consulted.

May I put it to the Minister that they were not consulted and would he arrange consultations and see to it that if they are against amalgamation he will reconsider the matter?

We might reconsider it in regard to consultation but not in regard to the amalgamation which is to the benefit of the pupils with whom I am mainly concerned.

Would not consultation be a bit pointless, then?

That might be so but the pupils would benefit by amalgamation and the pupils are my concern.

Was not £3,000 spent on the school now to be closed less than three years ago?

That may be so but the children are my main concern.
